The behavioral interview is popular with recruiters while unnerving and puzzling to interviewees. During the behavioral interview job seekers are asked questions about previous work/school experiences. The premise of behavioral interview questions is past performance predicts future performance.
The technique to giving a solid behavioral interview performance is to use storytelling to answer the question. Storytelling can turn a simple answer into a memorable one. Stories are 22 times more memorable than facts. You should always have a few stories from your resume and previous jobs memorized and ready to deploy during the interview to answer commonly asked interview questions (tell me about a time you made a mistake). Then use the CAR method to weave a story on the spot. The CAR method:
C – Challenge and Context Describe the challenge you faced and build in some context making sure it’s relevant to the skill that is being asked about
A – What action did you take Be specific and include your thought process and rationale for your actions
R – What was the end result Try to end the story with a positive resolution even if it’s just that you learned from the experience. Here is the place to quantify and add stats
