Networking is the best, and most uncomfortable, way to find a job!
Even the extroverts sometimes struggle with the art of networking and making conversation with strangers. It can be intimidating, anxiety producing, and stressful….but is also necessary to get yourself out there when you are job searching.
One of the hardest parts of attending networking events is breaking the ice and starting a conversation with a stranger. Today it seems making small talk or “chit chat” is a lost art. Yet this is a golden opportunity to explore your commonality with someone you’ve just met and to make a real connection. I’ve spent many years (more than I’ll admit to here) watching college students and recent graduates struggle and fail to successfully chat up a recruiter during a job fair, networking event, or even at the start of an interview. It’s a missed opportunity and can lead to further awkwardness during the interaction.
