Yes!  Yes they are still important in today’s job search.  You should still include a cover letter with your resume because 26% of recruiters still consider them a critical part of the job search process and read every one submitted.  According to a Harris Poll, another 56% of recruiters want applicants to attach a cover letter to their application.  However, only 31% of applicants submit cover letters.  So looking at the numbers at least half of the time a hiring manager wants to see a cover letter.  Since you don’t know which 50% of the hiring managers you are sending you’re resume to prefer cover letters it’s a good bet to include a cover letter 100% of the time.  It will give you an edge over the 69% of applicants that aren’t writing and sending cover letters.

Writing a cover letter has many advantages.  It lets you highlight your accomplishments.  It can address any gaps in employment or skills.  It’s your chance to show your personality and let the employer know why you want to work for them and why they should want you to hire you.  Covers letters demonstrate both your enthusiasm and that you’re serious about the opportunity and willing to go the extra step to get it.  It can showcase your writing skills and style. Finally, cover letters are an opportunity to impress.  And first impresssions count!
